Positive developments in response to ANEXCO urgent action appeal

Further to the update in November on our Urgent Action appeal in support of SINTRAPEM union members at Costa Rican pineapple producer ANEXCO, we can report some recent developments, which we hope indicate that a satisfactory resolution to the grievances of union members will be possible.

We can report that:

1. The Costa Rican Labour Ministry has offered to provide a mediator to facilitate local dialogue between the union and ANEXCO management over the grievances raised by union members.

2. The union and ANEXCO management are engaged in discussion of the terms on which the three workers sacked since the Urgent Action appeal began could be rehired by ANEXCO.

These are encouraging but tentative developments, which we hope indicate that a positive outcome can be reached through dialogue.

We are very grateful for the international support for our Urgent Action – to date, 23,075 people have signed our email to ANEXCO in support of the union members. This support has been a significant factor in bringing the parties together, and producing these tentative positive developments.

As ANEXCO is a subsidiary of Fyffes, this action has now become part of the wider Freedom & Fairness for Fyffes Workers campaign.
