ANEXCO harasses and fires union members – ACT NOW!
The Ananas Export Company (ANEXCO) of Costa Rica produces pineapples for parent company Fyffes. According to trade union SINTRAPEM (Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores/as del Sector Privado Empresarial) its members (pictured bottom right) suffer anti-union harassment, persecution, unfair labour practices and discrimination.
This despite an agreement brokered by the Ministry of Labour between SINTRAPEM, the banana workers unions’ coordination body COSIBACR and ANEXCO, in March this year, which committed the union and the company to open a space for dialogue.
SINTRAPEM and COSIBACR are now calling for international solidarity in support of their call for:
- an immediate halt to harassment and discrimination against union members.
- constructive dialogue with ANEXCO, as agreed in March this year.
- ANEXCO to respect the fundamental ethical principles recognised by parent company Fyffes as a member of the UK government-sponsored Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) and one of the biggest suppliers of Fairtrade produce.
You can read more details of ANEXCO’s treatment of union members below and support this call by sending the email below to ANEXCO.
As ANEXCO is a subsidiary of Fyffes, this action has now become part of the wider Freedom & Fairness for Fyffes Workers campaign.
